Low-calorie coal can be used as an environmentally friendly source of energy. Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto pointed out, developed countries like Germany, have optimized coal for petrochemical industry and power plant.

“Low calorie coal is Indonesia’s potential that can be optimized in the future,” said Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto at CIMB Niaga Economic Forum 2017 event in Jakarta on Thursday (26/1/2017), in a press statement reported by Antara.

Furthermore, he describes Germany having an industry with coal power plant. They can produce coal with the lowest calories and capacity of 1.6 giga watts 2×800 MegaWatt.

Previously, the German company, PT Zemag Clean Energy Techology GmbH, will explore the development of coal gasification in Indonesia. The company will hold a local company in its business development.

In addition, the Director General of Chemical, Tekstill, and Multifarious Industries Ministry of Industry, Achmad Dwiwahjono, said the development of coal gasification in Indonesia has great potential.

According to him, it takes an investment of around Rp 13 trillion to produce 1,000 metric tons of coal gasification derivatives. The location of the plant, planned to be built in Kalimantan area.

The coal industry in Indonesia is still attractive to foreign investors amid the global economic slowdown. If calculated, during the test period can change 100,000 tons of coal to 3.600 million metric british thermal unit (mmbtu) of gas per day, he said.
